OS/2 eZine

16 April 2001

Robert Basler is the president of Aurora Systems, Inc. and a dedicated OS/2 user since he tired of rebooting Windows 3.1 twenty times a day.

Pete GrubbsPete Grubbs is a self-described OS/2 wonk, a former doctoral candidate in English literature at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, a former part-time faculty member at Penn State and is still mucking about with a copy editing/creation service, The Document Doctor, which tailors documents for small businesses. He has also been a professional musician for 20 years and is working on his next album, scheduled for release in early 2001.

Lotus Organizer for OS/2 Warp 4

Unfortunately the full review for Lotus Organizer wasn't ready for the issue deadline, so Pete and I have put together a bit of information on the new version, if you have any questions, bring them to the forums.

Rob:

Organizer is a personal information manager which takes your day-planner and brings it into your computer almost literally, they even put the ring binder onscreen. Organizer offers a calendar, day planner, to-do lists, notebook, contacts management, and a telephone book.

Reporting

Organizer offers an impressive variety of reports from the personal information you enter, 34 in all. Some of these are: Daily Calender/To Do, Daily Trifold List, Status Report, Address Card (Rolodex), Calls Card, Yearly Planner, Anniversary List and many more. Samples of all of these come in the printed Organizer Print Layout Guide.

Pete:

I haven't found any great differences between this version of Organizer and the one previously reviewed.

[Week at a glance.]

One of the little things that's pretty neat is the inclusion of a reference section which is free for download from Lotus. It includes some conversion tables (metric to imperial, that sort of thing) and more holidays than anyone in his right mind would want to know about. In this version Lotus has corrected the bug which would steal the cursor away from your desktop whenever you closed it.

[Reference Contents.]

[Holidays.]

I like Organizer and I use it, but I wouldn't buy it if it didn't come bundled with SmartSuite. Lotus has yet to include PalmPilot support, which makes this version of Organizer much less attractive than it would be otherwise. I suspect that the first company or individual who can make a decent PIM which will read Organizer files and work with the Palm will grab the lion's share of the OS/2 market. He'll get my bucks.
